Lee Clark resigned as Hartlepool United head coach with immediate effect after a home defeat by Worthing. The loss was a third consecutive defeat and the club's sixth in seven matches, leaving them in the National League.
Clark announced his departure in a post-match interview at Victoria Park. "I resign from my position with immediate effect," he said. The former Newcastle and Sunderland player had taken over in the summer after a short spell with Rotherham United. His team had conceded many goals in their last seven games, a recent form that contributed to the decision.
Fans had called for his resignation during the game, a result that leaves Hartlepool behind leaders Boreham Wood. Clark expressed his regret at the situation. "I wanted to give this club and the fans something to be proud of, what they deserve, but I haven't been able to do that unfortunately," he said. The club's goal difference reflects the challenges faced during his tenure.
The club, now in its fourth year in the National League, begins its permanent manager search since dropping out of the English Football League. American businessman Landon Smith took over as owner earlier this year. Hartlepool's next match is away to Scunthorpe.
