Hartlepool United were soundly beaten 4-1 by Scunthorpe United in a National League match on Saturday. Will Harris gave the visitors a first-half lead, but Scunthorpe scored four times without reply to secure a comprehensive victory.
Harris headed Hartlepool in front after 27 minutes, connecting with a cross from Callum Deeming. The advantage lasted just three minutes before Paddy Jones equalised for the hosts. James Norwood, making his debut, then headed Scunthorpe ahead in the tenth minute of first-half stoppage time.
Scunthorpe extended their lead quickly after the restart. Three minutes into the second half, Norwood turned provider for Kyle Hurst to score. The fourth goal came in the 68th minute when Hugh Parker headed home. Hartlepool made a flurry of substitutions, including the withdrawal of Harris and the booked Jermaine Benn, but could not mount a comeback.
The defeat leaves Hartlepool 21st in the National League table with just nine points from ten games. They have now lost their last five matches in all competitions. Caretaker bosses Gary Liddle and Adam Clayton, who took charge following Lee Clark's resignation last week, have overseen three of those losses.
