Hartlepool United have been hit by a significant double injury blow to their defensive ranks, with two key players facing extended spells on the sidelines. Manager Lee Clark revealed the news at a pre-match press conference ahead of the National League fixture against Kidderminster Harriers.
Defender Max Kouogun is facing a minimum of two months out after suffering ligament damage to his ankle. Clark said the injury occurred when Kouogun landed awkwardly during the recent match against Eastleigh. "We've had a scan on Max Kouogun with his ankle issue when he landed in the Eastleigh game, he's got some kind of ligament damage, so Max will be out for a minimum of two months," Clark told reporters. The club is consulting a specialist to determine if surgery is required, which could extend his absence to three months.
Goalkeeper setback
In a separate setback, on-loan Chelsea goalkeeper Max Merrick has been diagnosed with a thigh tear and will be out for six weeks. Merrick returned to his parent club for assessment and scanning. "He's had a scan and he spoke with their medical team. Not good news, but, you know, probably what we expected." Clark said.
With Merrick unavailable, 21-year-old Nathan Fisher, who joined on a free transfer from Middlesbrough, will continue as the first-choice goalkeeper. Player-coach Adam Smith will provide cover from the bench for the upcoming match. Clark confirmed discussions are ongoing with director of football Chris Maxwell and the recruitment team about whether to bring in a new goalkeeper or wait for Merrick's return.
Further squad updates
The injury news comes as Hartlepool look to improve on their current league position of 12th, having taken nine points from their opening seven games. Their recent form shows one win in their last five outings, a run that includes a 2-0 defeat to Kidderminster Harriers on September 11.
Clark provided updates on other squad members. Winger Corey McKeown has been placed in a surgical boot due to bone bruising on his foot, while midfielder Owen Hampson has returned to full training with the group after his own injury layoff.
The loss of Kouogun, described by Clark as "a big player for us in every sense of the word," is a particular concern for a defence that has conceded six goals so far this season. The manager and his staff must now find solutions within the squad as they prepare for their next National League fixture.
