What happened?
Charlie Wyke has confirmed his retirement from football after a cardiac arrest in 2021. Wyke, who played for Hartlepool United, Middlesbrough, and Sunderland, among others, said he has decided to end his playing career.
Why it matters for Hartlepool
Wyke's retirement marks the end of an era for Hartlepool United, who have been searching for a new striker to lead their attack. The club has been linked with several players in recent weeks, but none have been confirmed.
What comes next?
Hartlepool United's next fixture is against Harrogate Town on February 16, 2027, and the club will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing loss in their previous match. The team will be hoping to find some consistency and get back to winning ways.
Wyke's retirement statement in full:
'I've decided to retire from football after a lot of thought. I've been lucky enough to play for nine brilliant clubs, win promotions, lift a trophy at Wembley, and share dressing rooms with some unbelievable people over the last 15 years. Like any career, there have been highs and lows. Mine just happened to include a couple of challenges I never thought I'd have to face. When I suffered a cardiac arrest in 2021, I didn't know if I'd ever play football again. To be honest, football wasn't my biggest concern. I just wanted to be there for my family and friends. The quick thinking of Leam Richardson and Dr Jonathan Tobin saved my life, and I will be forever in debt to them. The support I received from my friends, family, and former clubs has been incredible, and I'm grateful for every moment I've had on the pitch.
I'll always treasure the memories I've made, and I'll always be grateful for the friendships I've formed. I'm looking forward to the next chapter of my life and seeing what the future holds. I'm proud of what I've achieved, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to have played the game I love.'
